An “X” on the Sidewalk

When my dad, a country preacher, took a church in the city, he was in the habit of helping needy people. They began knocking on our door almost every day. He gave them clothes, food and money. Their stories of need were convincing. Often, they would eat at our table and listen to our devotions. They even put an X on the sidewalk to let other “men of the road” know where to get a handout. In St. Augustine's Confessions Saint Augustine wrote "You have made us for yourself, O Lord, and our heart is restless until it rests in you." Humanity is full of dreamers, skeptics, explorers, inventors, conquerors and creators. We typically find little satisfaction in sitting still (as you may have experienced on these recent snow days). Our brains are constantly at work; even when we sleep. We are naturally impatient and desire to be moving or doing something.
