"God help all the fishes!"

pastorpen3Sam Houston, a hero of the Texas War for Independence and president of the Republic of Texas, became a Baptist late in life. Rev. Rufus Burleson was president of Baylor University and pastor of the small Baptist church at Independence, Texas, southwest of Huntsville. Houston walked down the aisle, shook Burleson's, and said, "I give you my hand and with it I give my heart to the Lord."

Houston was baptized November 19, 1854. Texans came from throughout the countryside to see the baptism of the victor over Santa Anna at the battle of San Jacinto.

Burleson, after baptizing Houston said, "Now Sam, your sins are all washed away."

Replied Houston: "God help all the fishes."

Houston, noticing he had forgotten to remove his wallet before he was dunked into the water, told Burleson, "Well, preacher you've baptized my pocketbook."

I wonder how many of our pocketbooks here at Wake Chapel have been baptized. When God truly has us, He should also have that which is ours.

Rejoice! God has given us opportunities to further our mission, increase our outreach and to be part of God's program here in Fuquay-Varina. Let's make sure that the church of which we are a part is the best it can be, not merely adequate.

With Jesus' love,
