"Even though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been distressed by various trials, so that the proof of your faith, being more precious than gold which is perishable, even though tested by fire, may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ." - 1 Peter 1:6-7
Do you know how gold is refined? With today's refining technology, one troy ounce of gold can be extracted from 15,000 pounds of low grade ore. What's "1 troy ounce" you ask? It's about the size of an Andes chocolate mint. Wow! Talk about getting a little bit from a lot.
The steps included in this extraction process include separation, concentration, and purification. In the separation phase, all the non gold properties are removed through crushing and grinding the raw materials. In the concentration and purification phases, other chemicals are added to further remove any impurities from the gold.
Likewise, our faith is being made pure when we submit to God's sanctification process. Sometimes it may feel like crushing and grinding. Are you ready to let Him into the private areas of your life and clean house? Will you allow Him to guide your steps? Can you accept the fact that you're going to have to let go of some bad habits and immature thinking? Do you realize that this process will be uncomfortable?
We must have an eternal perspective throughout our trials and sufferings. God is growing us up. He is setting our eyes on what's most important in this life and the life to come. The result of the sufferings of a faithful Christian will be the praise and glory and honor of our Lord Jesus Christ. I appreciate how the Mes-sage translation has these verses: "Pure gold, put in at the fire comes out of it proved pure; genuine faith put through this suffering comes out proved genuine. When Jesus wraps this all up, it's your faith, not your gold that God will have on display as evidence of his victory."
