"If then there is any encouragement in Christ, if any consolation of love, if any fellowship with the Spirit, if any affection and mercy, fulfill my joy by thinking the same way, having the same love, sharing the same feelings, focusing on one goal. Do nothing out of rivalry or conceit, but in humility consider others as more important than yourselves. Everyone should look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others." — Philippians 2:1-4
On October 29, super-storm Sandy devastated much of the northeast, especially in New Jersey and New York. Speaking solely of his own state (New Jersey), Governor Chris Christie says the storm caused $36.8 billion in damage, and that more than 30,000 homes or businesses were destroyed or sustained substantial damage. As of November 4, Sandy was credited for the deaths of 110 people.
Responding to this catastrophe, two Christian organizations (P2 Missions & World Changers) have teamed up to provide students the opportunity to assist the people of New Jersey who have been deeply impacted emotionally, physically, and financially.
I am happy to announce that we will be partnering once again with World Changers (a missions organization we have partnered with many times before) and taking our youth to Neptune, New Jersey on a disaster relief mission trip July 6-13. We will be partnering with local churches in New Jersey to be the hands and feet of Jesus to people in need. The format of this trip will look similar to World Changers trips we’ve gone on in the past, but obviously different in the since that it’s a disaster relief trip. Students can expect to serve in a variety of ways such as debris removal, wheelchair ramp construction, exterior painting, drywall instillation, and of course evangelism. Our mission with World Changers will be not to simply provide free labor to the people of New Jersey, but to use our free labor as an opportunity to tell them about the everlasting hope, true life, solid security, and gracious salvation they can only have through Jesus Christ.
In compliance with World Changers guidelines, this trip is not designed as an outreach tool to involve un-churched youth or adults in our ministry. This trip is for Christian students in 6th grade through college who are actively involved at our church. We will also need one adult per every 5 students we take. Along with the 500+ other volunteers who will be serving with us that week, we will be lodging at Neptune High School. There we will eat, sleep, shower, and worship. The cost for this trip is $309 per person, and a $50 deposit is due before January 13.
